A new Helsinki

During the summer of 1975 Thirty-five states, including the US, Canada, and all Europeans states except Albania and Andorra signed a declaration, as a crucial step to improving relations between the countries of the Soviet bloc and the West.

After 50 years the spirit of the Helsinki Conference with its revolutionary Declaration has lost none of its relevance or urgency. It’s time to take up that message of – among others – reciprocal respect of boarders and human rights, of refraining from the threat or use of force, of peaceful settlements of disputes, of fulfilment in good faith of obligations under international law.

Walter Baier, President of the European Left has set up a notebook together with Maurizio Certini, Vice-President of the La Pira Foundation on the need to revitalize the spirit and message of that great event that was the 1975 Helsinki Conference, which brought an end to the Cold War.

The publication in Italian and in English was edited by Carlo Cefaloni, journalist for the magazine Citta Nuova of the Focolare Movement.
